A TEACHER in Hemingbrough is taking part in the York 10k run to raise cash for a condition suffered by one of her pupils.

Helena Cliff, 27, a teacher from Hemingbrough Community Primary School, hopes to raise awareness of the diabetes that eight-year-old pupil, Evie Cumberland, has to manage every day.

Helena, 27, decided to fundraise for Diabetes UK after being given responsibility of looking after Evie, who has Type 1 diabetes, on a recent school residential trip.

Helena said: “On the school trip I was responsible for counting Evie’s carbohydrates and calculating the right dose of insulin she needed to inject.

“It was during this time that I realised just how much time and effort diabetes demanded of this little girl’s life.”

“At school there is never a single complaint or moan about her diabetes. She just gets on with it.”

Evie’s mum, Natalie Cumberland, said she is committed to making life as normal as possible for Evie. Although Evie understands the importance of thinking about what she eats and the activities she is doing, as well as the effect these may have on her blood glucose levels, she does not allow this to stop her from doing all the things she wants to do.

Natalie said: “Evie’s school has always been more than fantastic at dealing with her diabetes. Before she went on the three-day school residential trip, Miss Cliff made a home visit to ensure that she was ready to take over the role of ‘mum’ and understood everything that needed to be done to make sure the trip ran smoothly.”

Anyone who would like to fundraise for Diabetes UK by taking part in the York Run For All should phone Ann Rowe on 01325 488 606 or email ann.rowe@diabetes.org.uk by Wednesday.
