THIS was the dramatic scene after a motorist crashed her car in a York main road.

The driver was travelling along Poppleton Road when she smashed into cars parked at the side of the road, flipping her own vehicle onto its roof.

The emergency services were called and the woman was taken to York Hospital with minor injuries. She was discharged later.

Police are now investigating whether she had been drinking before the accident, which happened on Sunday at 10pm.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the collision.”

A resident of Poppleton Road, who did not want to be named, said he was first on the scene and that a smell of alcohol was coming from the car.

He added: “Her knees were trapped behind the steering wheel and she was on the roof.

“Then other neighbours came and said not to move her. The emergency services were called and they were really quick.

“She had hit the first car with such a wallop and then shunted the other car. Thankfully there was no other traffic in the road at the time, as she really hit it with a thump.”

His neighbour, who also preferred to remain anonymous, said it was his partner’s father’s and sister’s cars which were damaged. He said both Renaults were write-offs.

He said the woman’s car “kind of jack-knifed” and that up to four cars in total were damaged.

He added: “There was a huge bang. I was asleep at the time but it woke me up and car alarms started going off.”
