A CANDIDATE for the Labour Party leadership was in York this week to meet a long-time friend and backer.

Former Foreign Secretary David Miliband was in the city at the invitation of York Central MP Hugh Bayley, who he also supported in the election campaign in May.

Mr Miliband gave a speech at the city’s Priory Street Centre yesterday.

Mr Bayley is backing Mr Miliband in the battle for the leadership of the Labour Party following the heavy defeat in this year’s General Election.

He faces opposition from his brother, Ed Miliband, Ed Balls, Andy Burnham and Diane Abbott.
