ACTRESS Dame Judi Dench collected an honorary degree from Nottingham Trent University at its July graduation and awards ceremonies.

Dame Judi, who was born in York, received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters in recognition of her extraordinary stage and screen career, and her part in the founding company of the Royal Shakespeare Company, which helped to inaugurate the new Nottingham Playhouse.

The former pupil of The Mount School in York received her degree alongside natural history film-maker Sir David Attenborough, comedian Billy Connolly – with whom Dame Judi appeared in the film Mrs Brown – and children’s poet and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen.

A triple Doctor of Letters award was also given to mother and sons Mrs Marina Smith, Dr James Smith and Dr Stephen Smith, for their work in remembrance of the Holocaust.
