I AM disgusted at the carry on I saw on TV and read in The Press about the match on Saturday, York City v Hull City, a so-called friendly football match. Why does this happen in the UK?

We, a friend and I, along with my two football-mad grandsons, aged 18 and 17, arrived in Calella, in the Costa Brava, Spain, in time to see the second half of the World Cup semi-final match against Germany in our hotel suite.

We ventured out after the match and were immediately on our guard, so used to the violence shown in UK where football is concerned. No need whatsoever. Credit due to the Spaniards, whatever nationality, winners or losers, everyone was welcome, the atmosphere was electric.

Come the final, one grandson sporting an orange shirt of Holland, the other grandson a Spanish scarf, again no animosity. When is the violence going to stop in this country? What is going to be done about the yobs who are called “football supporters”?

Well done Spain for your hospitality to the many nations in your country at the time of the World Cup. We are proud to have been there when you won.
