A QUINTET of talented rugby league youngsters from York had their hard work rewarded at the Featherstone Rovers Scholarship presentation evening.

The promising local lads – four from York Acorn and one from Heworth – signed up last August to the scholarship trailblazer programme at the Featherstone club.

The under-15 players then embarked on a season against six Super League titans, vanquishing Hull KR, Wakefield Wildcats and Huddersfield Giants in the process.

Jordan Myers and Jack Byrnes, both York Acorn and ex-North Yorkshire Service Area representatives, were presented with personalised team shirts for their exploits from Featherstone first team coach Daryl Powell and reserves coach Danny Evans.

Heworth and ex-York City Knights scholar Jordan Potter earned the player of the year runner-up award, presented by U15s head coach Tim Sharp.

Acorn and ex-North Yorkshire Service Area player Joe Deighton was named U15s players’ player of the year runner-up.

U14s star Harry Bromwich, meanwhile, enjoyed a ninemonth training and development programme covering core skills, agility, technique and fitness for his Trailblazer scholarship.

The Acorn and ex-North Yorkshire Service Area youngster received the scholar of the year award from U14s coach Bernard Tomlin for his efforts.

The lads’ talents have already caught the eye of other Super League clubs for the coming season, though no firm commitments have been made as of yet.

They would also like to extend their thanks to everybody involved in coaching and developing junior rugby league, who hopefully can oversee the nurturing of yet more trailblazing York youngsters.
