PLEASE can anyone help solve an ongoing query, which none of my family who live in York can help me with?

Years ago I was regular supporter of York City Football Club, and to get to Bootham Crescent we walked along Asylum Lane from Clarence Street and over the “monkey bridge”, which 50 years ago was a ramshackle wooden bridge, and we always felt ‘lucky’ when we reached the other side safely.

My query is, how did it get this name? No one seems to know the answer and the present bridge doesn’t have the same appeal and memories.
