ALTHOUGH not a golfer myself, the Open Championship from St Andrew’s was a pleasure to watch on TV.

As a youth in Scotland, we attended the Open at Royal, in Yorkshire, by going in at the “Aberdeen Gate”.

Explanatory phrase: “As empty as Aberdeen on flag day.” A 200-yard paddle along the beach; shoes on; then off the beach on to the course.

Remember also when league football and rugby matches opened the gates athalf-time, and Headingley test cricket matches were free after about 3.30pm.

Music festivals were also free, such as the Isle of Wight pop festival, 1969 and 70, to see such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Who.

How times have changed!
