IT WAS complete Madness at York Racecourse as thousands of fans donned fez hats and turned out to see Suggs and his ska band perform.

The pop star obviously hadn’t worn his lucky baggy trousers because, as he told the bouncing crowds, he had won nothing at the races themselves.

“What a beautiful town, what a beautiful racecourse, what a shame about the horses,” he said.

The band performed at the racecourse’s Music Showcase event, which combines competitive racing with live music to provide an alternative evening out in the venue’s summer racing schedule and attract new audiences.

Tonight, the racecourse will be presenting stars from ITV’s X-Factor; Olly Murs, Jamie Archer and Rachel Adedeji.

However, in a late change of plan, Lucie Jones from the X-Factor has been replaced by Lee Ryan, formerly a member of boyband Blue, who is now pursuing a solo career.

James Brennan, head of marketing and sponsorship at the course, said: “It’s another weekend of firsts at York.

“Friday evening saw the biggest band we’ve ever had perform on the Knavesmire and Saturday is the first time that we have sold out an enclosure in advance.”

Mr Brennan said that Lucie had been asked to perform in Les Miserables in the West End and so was unable to appear.

“We wish Lucie all the best in the West End and she has apologised to fans that were hoping to see her and wishes she could be in two places at once.

“People love coming to York and Lee Ryan was about to jet off on holiday.

“But he has delayed it for us so we’re looking forward to him coming and entertaining the Knavesmire crowd,” Mr Brennan said.
