NEIGHBOURS used buckets of water to tackle a fire a York house which is believed to have been targeted in an arson attack in the early hours of today.

The property in Hewley Avenue, in the Tang Hall area of the city, was left damaged by smoke after flames were spotted at the front of the building at about 12.15am.

People living in the street came out of their homes to tackle the fire, with firefighters from York and Selby also being called to the scene.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said petrol is believed to have been used to start the fire outside the front door of the house, which was empty at the time. The incident has been reported to police and an investigation has been launched.
