THE heart of York became a stream of cyclists as pedal power took over the city’s streets.
A host of elite riders were among those taking part in the first York Cycling City Races, which weaved through Duncombe Place, Blake Street, St Sampson’s Square and Goodramgate before sweeping to a finish at the Minster.
Among those drawn to the city for the inaugural event were Olympic gold medallist and team pursuit world record-holder Ed Clancy, British Road race champion Kristian House and York competitor Kit Gilham, a former winner of the FDB Irish RAS King of the Mountains title.
Younger cyclists, including pupils from York schools, and families competed in a series of races, with amateur cyclists also being catered for alongside a Revenge of the Ouse-themed triathlon competition and a challenge involving teams from local businesses racing in fancy dress on folding Brompton bikes.
Visitors packed the streets to watch the action, organised by the Cycling City York project in partnership with Clifton Cycling Club and British Cycling.
