WHY me? – That was the question being asked by York cabbie David Hillman after a hoodie thug smashed his sitting room window with an iron bar.

The 53-year-old told today how he was watching TV at his home in Rawdon Avenue, Tang Hall, when he heard an “almighty bang” and splinters of glass flew across the room.

“It’s a doubled glazed window and must have been hit with a massive force – it was such a loud bang,” he said.

“Someone I know who was walking his dog 200 yards away in St Nicholas Fields even heard it.

“I was in shock and didn’t move straight away, but a near neighbour who heard it came out and saw a hoodie running off, carrying an iron bar, or possibly a baseball bat.

“The hoodie then ran round the corner and the neighbour heard a car screeching off.

“About half an hour later, a car came along the road and appears to have stopped outside to have a look before screeching off.

“I think I must have been deliberately targeted, but think he went to the wrong house. I’ve lived here ten years and can’t think of any reason why anyone should want to do this to me. My concern is that you hear in these cases how they sometimes come back and do something worse.

“I was on the settee behind the sitting room door, which was left open and took some of the glass splinters. If it hadn’t been open, I think I’d have been showered in glass.

“There must have been a backswing, as I found shattered glass in the garden as well as the sitting room.”

He said he had reported the incident, which happened at about 11.30pm on Wednesday, to police, but was told without a good eyewitness description of the offender there was little they could do.

A police spokesman confirmed the broken window had been reported to them, and a witness had said the person responsible had used an iron bar or a baseball bat. He said no one had been arrested.
