POLICE are reminding residents to safeguard their property after a spate of break-ins in York.

Over the weekend, a number of houses in York were burgled, with cars, electrical equipment and jewellery being taken. A York Police spokeswoman said thieves broke into a house in Jubilee Terrace, in the Leeman Road area of the city, between 5pm on Saturday and 12.20am on Sunday.

The thieves got into the property through a bathroom window and stole a Playstation 3.

A “two-in-one” burglary was also reported to the police over the weekend.

Thieves broke into the property in Ings View between 12.01am and 8.30am on Sunday.

They broke in through patio doors and stole keys to a blue Audi S3, registered YY10 FWT, before making off in the car.

A third burglary happened at a house in St Olave’s road sometime between Friday night and the early hours of yesterday morning. The burglars broke into the house via an insecure window and stole a laptop and a quantity of jewellery.

Police say 35 per cent of all burglaries are crimes of opportunity, where the burglars let themselves in through unlocked doors or windows.

They are urging homeowners to make sure doors and windows are always securely locked and keys are never kept near windows or doors, or visible from the letterbox.

They said people should take their car keys with them when they go to bed.

Residents are also advised to lock and secure their vehicles and store them out of sight, in a garage if possible, and be vigilant about vehicles they do not recognise moving around in the local area.

Anyone with any information about any of the burglaries that occurred over the weekend should phone North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060247.
