WORLD Cup winning legend Sir Geoff Hurst, champion jockey Richard Dunwoody and Yorkshire-born model Nell McAndrew will be among the thousands of runners taking part in this year’s York 10K.

Up to 6,000 runners will join together for the Run For All event this Sunday, set up in memory of heroic fundraiser Jane Tomlinson.

Sir Geoff, who is still the only player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, is the president of Run For All partner charity Sparks, which raises money for children’s medical research.

He said: “I’m delighted to be involved in the York 10K.

“As Sparks president, I regard the charity’s goal of trying to help all children to be born healthy and grow up healthy to be even more important than scoring the winner in a World Cup final.”

National Hunt legend Richard Dunwoody, winner of the Grand National and celebrated for his Cheltenham Gold Cup winning feats on legendary grey Desert Orchid, met Jane Tomlinson during her term as vice-president of Sparks.

Richard, a Sparks ambassador, said: “I’m honoured to be running for Sparks in the York 10k – even if it will feel a bit strange to be coming down the straight at York racecourse without a horse underneath me.”

Nell McAndrew, patron of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, has run at a number of Run For All events.

“It is fantastic to be joining the event in York,” she said.

“The Run For All 10Ks are always such special days, always uplifting and emotional at the same time. There is always such a brilliant atmosphere among those taking part and the crowds cheering everyone on.

“I always feel so touched by all those who are taking part to fundraise and try to make a difference to the lives of others, and so often to remember someone very special in their lives.”

The York 10K, now in its second year, will start and finish at York Racecourse and take runners into the city centre, past the York Minster and back along the riverside.
