Unbeaten Poppleton 1 need only four points from their last three matches to secure their eighth Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League title after they roundly thrashed Rowntree Park 82-26. Pop’s top two pairs each scored 28 games – a match-winning 56 games combined, and John Burdett and Nick Turnbull were not far behind on 26. Poppleton can only be caught by Fulford, who had both Baker brothers playing for them for the first time this season. Tom Baker partnered Richard Parker to score 25 games to pip brother Govind and Sean Evans, with 24, as Fulford beat York 62-46.

Poppleton 2 went down 68-40 to Dunnington, a win which saw the 2009 champions escape the relegation places. Bubwith fought back hard after a poor start at David Lloyd, but missed out on the win and they still need two points to guarantee their top flight spot.

A late-arrival dented Boston Spa’s chances of a speedy return to division one. The division two leaders had to concede two rubbers in a surprise 46-62 reverse to struggling Stamford Bridge. Top spot was taken by Wigginton, who pipped second-placed Pocklington 55-53.

That was despite a huge 27 from Pock’s Darren Nicholson-Smith and Tony Britton.

Copmanthorpe suffered a knock-back at Starbeck 59-49, who are odds-on to stay up. Strensall, looking for their second win, led Castlegarth 39-33 going into the final round. However, a vital 10-2 from Steve Jones and Matt Vines gave Castlegarth the two points.

Dark horses Knaresborough laid claim to a promotion spot in division three with a crushing 68-40 defeat of leaders Appleton Roebuck. Justin Crowe and Alex Wilkin scored a match-winning 29 games for the home team, which puts them only two points away from a return to division two. York 2 are the new leaders on games won after cruising past hosts Rufforth 67-41. John Logan and Sam Barnard were on target for York with 24 games. Boston Spa 2 have every chance of staying in division three after walloping lowly Civil Service 85-23.

Division four leaders Sherburn were quickest out the blocks as they beat Fulford 2 56-52.

A first round injury to Starbeck 2 captain Paul Evison handed Copmanthorpe 2 a huge 75-33 win, which took them second.

Pair of the week were Sheriff Hutton’s Kevin Fairclough and Chris Burnham, who won 32 games in a 59-49 win at Cliffe in division five. Division six leaders Heworth beat York 3 60-48.
