Updated: THE site of a former rubbish dump in York has been recognised as one of the best parks in the country.

The St Nicholas Fields nature reserve in the Tang Hall area of the city has received a Green Pennant Award in recognition of the work carried out by hundreds of volunteers to turn it into a home for wildlife and a space for the public to enjoy.

The accolade is part of the Green Flag scheme which has seen five other parks and open spaces in York claim awards for the way they are looked after.

John Brierley, project co-ordinator with the Friends of St Nicholas Fields, said: “St Nicholas Fields is a unique green space and the award is a tribute to all those people who have, over the last 20 years, helped to create it.

The tally of York’s Green Flag winners is one higher than last year, with previous victors Rowntree Park, West Bank Park, Rawcliffe Country Park and Glen Gardens repeating their successes of the past and Clarence Gardens also being named.

Judges chose the five sites because of their use of green space, the way their facilities are maintained and their safety and security standards.

Coun Nigel Ayre, City of York Council’s executive member for leisure, culture and social inclusion, said: “Hopefully, these awards will encourage even more people to pay a visit to the park this summer.”
