MORE than 30,000 homes across York have now received new boxes to store materials left out for recycling.

The first phase of the delivery programme carried out by City of York Council has seen the houses given two additional boxes with lids, one to store glass bottles and jars and the other for paper and cardboard, as well as nets to cover their current container for plastic bottles and metal cans.

The authority says more than 200 residents have also requested extra boxes, which are to be delivered during the next few weeks, while elderly and disabled people are being offered extra help to make sure they can use the new system without any difficulties, with wheels and tow ropes being fitted to some boxes so they can be pulled along.

By autumn, every home in York will have the boxes, with deliveries being put on hold during the summer holidays, but resuming on September 6.
