THE argument about the location of Haxby railway station has been simmering for about a decade, during which time the LibDems have insisted there is no alternative to their choice without ever explaining why a site accessible from the ring road was unacceptable.

Their “preferred choice” is based, they tell us, on a survey done ten years ago.

At that time I lived ten minutes walk from the old station and was not included in the survey. So who was and what were the results?

Now, Coun Galloway warns any rethink could delay development for another ten years, implying matters should proceed regardless of whether the site is right or wrong. This hardly seems logical. Instead, since financial support from the Government seems unlikely, is not this the ideal time to review the location?

Surely the ward committees of Haxby, Wigginton and New Earswick could issue a questionnaire asking two simple questions: 1. Do you agree with the need for a local railway station serving the area?

2. Should it be loctated: at the recommended site; between the southern boundaries of Haxby and Wigginton and the northern boundary of New Earswick and accessible from the ring road; elsewhere?
