THE title track was inspired by Bentley’s visit to a rural part of Tennessee, and with haunting backing vocals courtesy of Alison Krauss, it takes you straight to the Blue Ridge Mountains in all their sparse beauty.
This is bluegrass with a difference and, like the Coal Porters, Bentley makes bluegrass for people who don’t do bluegrass. He also believes that bluegrass and country should live side by side, like they did in the 1950s, and to help prove the point the likes of Kris Kristofferson and Tim O’Brien are enlisted as guest singers.
He calls it hardcore-inspired bluegrass, although it does become more traditional as it unfurls, with trademark banjos, mandolins and fiddles. Whatever label you give it, this is an album most will connect with.
