HERE’S a happy curiosity. Back in 1986, before The Jayhawks made a name for themselves as harmonious pioneers of alt-country, the band issued a vinyl release that only ran to 2,000 copies.

Not many fans will have laid their hands on that, but now they can finally buy the album on CD. Mind you, even the faithful may be in for a bit of a jolt. Much of this is shin-kicking, dust-raising hillbilly music, seemingly performed by a group of wiry old musicians who live at the bottom of a bourbon bottle, rather than a fresh-faced collection of would-be stars.

Still, once you recover from that surprise, there is much to enjoy here, with Let The Critics Wonder hinting at greater things to come.
