IT WAS the talk of the school when 40 professional rugby union players invaded the pitch at Tadcaster Grammar School.

Leeds Carnegie players and coaching staff, led by head coach Neil Back, swapped their usual Kirkstall training ground for the pitches at Tadcaster Grammar to hold a full training session watched by students from Years 7 to 13.

The Leeds contingent then chatted over lunch and held workshops in the afternoon, sharing their expertise and techniques.

Paul Walker, PE teacher and co-ordinator of the day’s events, said it was a “wonderful”

experience for pupils.

“What a fantastic opportunity for the students at Tadcaster Grammar,” he said.

“We have enjoyed many benefits from our link with Leeds Carniege and this is another example of the work they are prepared to do in the local community.

“The students have had a wonderful day, after all, it’s not every day that a group of elite professional athletes come into school and we are very grateful to the Leeds squad and all involved for the excellent day of training and fellowship.”

Former dual code international John Bentley, Leeds’ community marketing manager, said: “The reasons for the visit to Tadcaster Grammar School were two-fold.

“Firstly, our boys are in pre-season preparation, which is long and arduous, and they need fresh scenery.

“Secondly, these visits are very important for helping to raise the profile of Leeds Carnegie, while delivering high quality coaching to youngsters in the local area.

“The lads enjoyed the excellent facilities at Tadcaster immensely and then had lunch with the students, but they wanted to give something back.

“During the afternoon an extensive coaching session took place which we hoped benefited all students, not just those thinking of taking up the sport as a profession.”
