NEWLY-CROWNED county champion Sam Wilkinson is bidding for England honours next week.

The Fulford Golf Club junior prospect landed the Yorkshire Under-14 title at Wheatley in Doncaster last week.

Now the English prize of the coveted Reid Trophy for the national U14 strokeplay 54-hole championship at Hesketh, near Southport, from Tuesday to Thursday, is his target to further reinforce what has been a superb season.

The county conquest at Wheatley for the 13-year-old Huntington School pupil saw him finish three shots ahead of his nearest challenger with rounds of 74 and 76.

And that success followed on from an impressive call-up to the Yorkshire teenage team rank earlier in the season.

Wilkinson, whose handicap has now been trimmed to three, made his Yorkshire juniors debut in April when he won his foursomes and singles matches against the North of England in Darlington.

He then triumphed in his singles against hosts Wales U16s and also posted a gross 69 (nett 84) for his best ever round in a monthly medal at his home club of Fulford.

Next month remains equally nas busy for Wilkinson.

He has qualified for the English Golf Union skills final at Manchester GC and the North of England championships to be held at Pannal GC in Harrogate.

Allerthorpe Park GC was accorded a major tribute after it hosted the East Riding amateur championships.

The East Riding Union competition secretary John Freeman said: “The course on the day was excellent and, coupled with great hospitality, made for a fine East Riding Amateur Championships.”

Paul Lockwood (+3) won the 36-hole strokeplay event with a score of 71 66, while Allerthorpe Park’s Iain Charlton won the best net with 139.

NORTH Yorkshire’s most successful amateur women’s player, Emma Brown, created a new ladies’ record for the Welham course at Malton & Norton GC, with a gross 64, against the par of 72.

Her handicap has now been reduced to +4.

Danny’s backing ploy

HE may have got an invite to compete in the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits, but Danny Willett has not forgotten his North Yorkshire roots.

Willett, who is coached by esteemed golf master Graham Walker at The Oaks GC, has again agreed to come and support The Oaks’ impressive Junior Pro-Am competition this Monday.
