A GROUP of volunteers has published an information pack on Cawood Castle Garth.

Cawood Castle was formerly the country residence of the Archbishop of York from the early 12th century.

The Garth is land behind the castle covering 14 acres with moats, fishponds, earthworks and the remains of a rare medieval garden, one of the few remaining in the country.

In 1986, the residents of Cawood bought the Garth to preserve it for the community and since then digs have been carried out and artefacts discovered.

Earlier this year, the Cawood Castle Garth Group put up three interpretation boards on the site giving visitors the history and directions to various places of interest on the site.

These were funded by a lottery grant and with money left over 1,000 copies of the brochure have been produced. Copies have been given to the local school and other village organisations and will shortly go on sale in the village and will also be available at the village craft fair on the August bank holiday weekend.
