AN OVERTURNED lorry caused chaos on two North Yorkshire roads.

The articulated lorry overturned on the A59 roundabout near Allerton Park, above the A1(M) at junction 47.

Emergency services were called to the incident at about 10.50am yesterday and the Highways Agency closed one lane of the A59.

It also closed one lane of the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) underneath the roundabout because of fears about debris where the lorry damaged the parapet of the bridge falling onto the A1(M).

The male driver of the lorry was taken to Harrogate District Hospital with leg pains.

The HGV was finally recovered just before 5pm and the A1(M) was fully reopened. The A59 remained affected until 6.30pm, while the road was cleared up.

Traffic was also disrupted on the A1079 near Market Weighton when a black Hyundai Coupe caught fire close to Arras Hill near Sancton.

Police passed the burning car at 11.30am yesterday and fire crews cleared the disruption by 12.20pm.

The incident caused queues of traffic because the vehicle left a slick of oil going up the hill.
