THANK goodness there is somebody with the foresight to realise that the proposed 6,000 capacity all-seater stadium would jeopardise the progress of York City FC and York City Knights (The Press, July 30).

John Guildford’s proposed site would reduce traffic congestion at the Hopgrove roundabout with 99 per cent of visiting teams for both clubs coming along the A64. As Mr Guildford correctly states, it is better to get it right first time rather than look for costly improvements at a later date.

• I WOULD like to encourage City of York City to reconsider the recommendation to locate York City to Monks Cross for the following reasons:- 1. By knocking down Monks Cross, the city loses a perfectly good facility and loses over a year of use while new facilities are constructed.

2. The traffic congestion at Monks Cross is already very bad and would be made much worse, especially if it is to be open seven days a week.

3. The cost will be much greater, taking into account the cost of knocking down Monks Cross.

4. There is a perfectly good site at the old Vickers Factory site on Haxby Road.

5. The Haxby Road site has a regular bus service which would make access for most people so much better.

6. The disruption in New Earswick village would be minimal as it would be mainly confined to match day and every two weeks.

I therefore hope the council will give these suggestions their support.

• IT NOW seems definite that York City will be moved from Bootham Crescent. I raised this point in March 2003 about all the loyal fans who were so passionate about their club, they had their remains interred in the pitch. It isn’t consecrated, of course, but those fans viewed it as hallowed. They all, including my mother and stepfather, expected that to be their final resting place, never dreaming the ground could ever be sold and developed, thereby disturbing their earthly remains.

Would it be too much to ask that when the ground is finally disposed of, a condition of the sale is that a small corner be dedicated to the memory of those who felt so strongly about York City football club. Perhaps a seat and a plaque with the names of the loyal fans. I have been told the club has a record of the people concerned.
