Updated: Man charged over York store raid A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon following a botched raid on a York store.
Armed police cordoned off Croftway, in the Acomb area of the city, at about 1.10pm on Monday following reports that a balaclava-wearing man, armed with a kitchen knife had walked into the Sainsbury’s at Jackson’s outlet in Beckfield Lane and ordered staff to hand over money.
The man left empty-handed and ran to a house in Croftway following the attempted raid. A suspect was later arrested. He remains in custody as inquiries continue.
Chief Inspector Dave Hannan, York Safer Neighbourhood Commander, said: “I would like to thank the members of the public who greatly assisted the police during the incident. The information they gave us enabled us to locate and arrest the suspect very quickly and bring the matter to a safe and satisfactory conclusion.”
