THE “core values and ethos” of a planned new secondary school in Holgate, York, will be revealed tonight before the project is submitted to the Government.

A team of seven teachers and education professionals, including the former deputy principal of York College, Daniel Khan, have worked on the plan.

Parents of children in the area are now being encouraged to attend the meeting at 7pm in Holgate Methodist Church to see for themselves the blueprint for the school.

Tim Moat, one of the Holgate parents behind the idea, said the outline application being showcased at the meeting would be sent to the Department for Education after being approved by the campaign’s steering group.

He said: “This is a very, very thorough manifesto of how we would educate the children at our new school.

“It’s been put together by a group of teachers who are very passionate and they have put forward what they see as the best possible means of secondary education.

“I would urge people who are even mildly interested to come along.”

The group believes that with the nearest secondary schools being York High School in Cornlands Road or Millthorpe in South Bank, Holgate needs a school of its own.

Parent-led schooling is a relatively new idea and is supported by the coalition Government. It involves parents effectively forming a board of governors with funding coming from central government.

The system is used in Sweden and the US, where schools have been set up in office blocks or even in restaurants while they are closed to customers during the day.

Mr Moat said: “We want to submit the application before the end of August. The Department of Education will see the case and say either it’s not enough or may say we need to do a little more work on it or may say our plan is fine.

“We would then be assigned a Department for Education officer to work with us on the plan.”

Mr Moat admitted the big question of premises still had to be addressed and the group still required another 40 signatures from parents interested in the new school, though the group is confident these obstacles will be overcome in the next few weeks.
