THE central building at the University of York’s £500 million campus expansion has been visited by the city’s MP.

York Central MP Hugh Bayley toured the new development at Heslington East to view the Ron Cooke Hub, which will bring together researchers, staff, students and the public once complete.

Elizabeth Heaps, the university’s pro-vice-chancellor for estates and special projects, told Mr Bayley about other new buildings on the site, including the Department of Theatre, Film and Television, Department of Computer Science, The York Law School and The York Management School.

Mr Bayley said the new buildings, which will cost £66 million, would benefit the whole city.

He said: “It is good to see the construction work progressing and to visualise how the new buildings will look.

“Sixty-six million pounds of new buildings have created hundreds of construction jobs and, in the long term, the expanded campus will provide jobs for local people as well as a highly skilled workforce which will attract more new jobs and investment to the city.”
