I WONDER if anyone can shed light on the origins of the stone gargoyles just below the gutters on some of the corner properties in the Leeman Road area.

I noticed them when we first came here nearly 20 years ago, but have never been able to find out anything further. I have never seen anything similar in other parts of the country.

The houses in this area were built in the late 19th century to house railway workers and it seems surprising that so much attention to detail was paid on what would be basic terraced houses. Has anyone noticed this detail in any other part of York?
