A woman whose garden was flooded “ankle deep” with raw sewage has received an apology and a promise of compensation from Yorkshire Water.

Jude Carrott, 46, of Dunnington, said she has had to have wooden decking ripped out of her garden and a layer of soil removed after the foul-smelling sewage flowed from a man hole cover on her property.

The mother-of-one said she was furious after being told by Yorkshire Water the problem at her Owlwood Lane home could take up to 36 hours to fix.

She said: “My brother came round on Thursday while I was away and he said he noticed a bad smell.

“Because I wasn’t here I couldn’t report it and when I got home on Friday there was raw sewage ankle deep.

“Yorkshire Water said they knew about it and told me they had 36 hours to fix it. I told them that was unacceptable.

“Friday turned in to Saturday morning and then it rained and people were showering and the problem just got worse.”

Miss Carrott said the flood was eventually fixed by Saturday evening, but not before the contaminated water had seeped through airbricks to the foundations of her house.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said: “We apologise to Mrs Carrott for the delay in responding to a problem of sewer flooding at her property and appreciate that given the nature of this unpleasant experience our response should have been quicker.

“We endeavour to resolve any issues like this as quickly as possible, especially when the sewage has leaked into customers properties.

“The sewage escape has now been cleared up and we will be fully compensating Mrs Carrott.

“On this occasion the blockage was caused by a third party putting bricks down a manhole on York Road.

“The bricks obviously restricted the natural flow of waste water down the sewer causing it to escape into Mrs Carrott’s garden.”

Alf Deuchars of Dunnington Parish Council, said he was surprised about the cause of the problem.

He said: “I have never heard of anyone dumping anything down a manhole – that’s just weird.

“It seems unbelievable that someone would put rubbish down there.”
