I WAS interested in the letter regarding Hunts Brewery, in Aldwark (Letters, August 3).
I was born in Aldwark and have vivid memories of men pulling handcarts full of spent hops and taking them to the yard further up the street. Quite a few of the staff lived in the street and they had a “knocker-up” every morning to make certain they got to work on time. Hunts also had a lemonade bottling plant in Bedern, just round the corner. The Ebor Vaults public house was owned by the brewery and the beer was the cheapest in York, being threepence cheaper because the barrels were just rolled across the yard, so there were no dray charges.
Hunts garage and stores were just over the road and they were taken over by the York police force and used as a garage and workshop.
