I KNOW this is somewhat after the fact, but I’d like to comment on the new Gillygate cycle feeder lane.
Having been a resident and frequent cyclist on Gillygate for more than 18 months, this lane is like a breath of fresh air to cyclists. It gives us room to breath and allows a far safer negotiation of the street than was possible before.
No squashing against the sides of cars and buses, not being forced on to the pavement when passing a wide vehicle. Great!
This is particularly true from my perspective of living there, when obviously there were no alternative routes to my door.
Yes, there are a number of vehicles (usually large European tourist buses) which squash into the lane. However, for the most part local buses and other large vehicles are making an exemplary effort to keep out of the lane.
In my view, as a driver and a cyclist, there is adequate space in the road for traffic in both directions to pass safely.
Now if only one could be introduced on Lendal Bridge!
