DAVID Cameron has tried to launch his ideas on what he terms as the Big Society, but what exactly is that? Is it just the coalition Government’s alternative to Labour’s Third Way? Is it a disguised cost-cutting plan?
Britain already has thousands, if not millions, of good people who do voluntary work in a wide selection of different areas, such as the Scouts, Sea Cadets, Girl Guides, hospitals, care homes, sports clubs, schools, universities, colleges, hobby clubs, the TA, hospices, meals on wheels, blind and handicapped associations, minibus drivers, and so on.
The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey, has very clearly spelt out the snags with Cameron’s vision on Big Society. I suspect it is not all it seems.
