READING For Fun, a small adult group based in York, would like to thank York Theatre Royal for allowing us to use the Keregan Room for the duration of the closure and refurbishment of York Central Library.
Reading For Fun is a group of volunteers who assist and engage with our readers, some of whom lack confidence with literacy or have learning difficulties, with reading and enjoying books of their choice.
The aim is to create a sociable atmosphere where our readers, who are mostly elderly, can have a chat, a laugh and a biscuit, while developing their literacy skills.
We found the staff at the Theatre Royal to be most welcoming and accommodating (especially Bryan on the stage door, who was fantastic) – even during hectic pre-performance times.
The Keregan Room itself is a comfortable and atmospheric space for group reading.
We have been really impressed by the Theatre Royal’s sense of community responsibility.
Without their generosity the group would not have been able to keep meeting during the library’s closure, and may have disbanded altogether.
