CYCLISTS from York have put pedal power to the test to raise more than £23,000 for a cancer charity.

About eight members of cycling club York Pedallers set off on a sponsored bike ride, raising an impressive £23,152 in aid of York Against Cancer. David Dickson, 55, chairman of accountancy firm Garbutt and Elliott, was accompanied by seven friends and businessmen: Patrick Shepherd, the Chairman of York Against Cancer, Jamie Shepherd, Lain Robertson, Mike Nicholas, David Mooney, Steven Loynes and Shaun Macnamara.

The group embarked upon a gruelling 1,012-mile bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats, cycling up to ten hours per day, in weather ranging from heavy rain, shine and strong winds.

Despite the unforgiving conditions, the eight-strong team completed the ride as planned.

Mr Dickson said: “The fight against cancer is a subject very close to my heart and this is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for York Against Cancer, which does such a fantastic job in raising money and awareness about the disease.”
