TWO fishermen were rescued after their vessel caught fire off the East Yorkshire coast.
Flamborough Head lifeboat and a rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield were scrambled to answer a mayday call from Blejan Eyhre, a fishing ship which was 18 miles to sea near Filey.
The ship’s crewmen had to take to a life raft when fire engulfed the ship. They were later airlifted off their emergency craft and taken to safety in Bridlington.
“This was a serious fire and the crew’s lives were probably saved by their handheld radio and the life raft they were carrying,” said Graham Dawson of Humber Coastguard.
“The unexpected does happen at sea and I’d advise all commercial crew to follow the Blejan Eyhre’s example and make sure you have essential safety equipment on board, like lifejackets, life rafts and communications equipment and that you know how to use it.”
