TWO men have been arrested in connection with the death of a University of York student.
James Matthews, 23, was found collapsed after a suspected drug overdose at his home in Seventh Avenue, Tang Hall, York, last Wednesday.
North Yorkshire Police have revealed that they arrested two men on Saturday in connection with Mr Matthews’ death, on suspicion of supplying drugs.
The men, a 28-year-old and a 36-year-old, both from the York area, who have not been identified, have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Detective Inspector Dave Ellis of York CID said the police treated all drug offences seriously, and would always seek to prosecute suppliers. He said: “Whether it is class A ‘hard’ drugs or those apparently more socially acceptable we always treat the supply of illegal drugs seriously. When these offences result in or contribute to somebody’s death, we will endeavour to prosecute those who supply the illegal substances.”
Professor Neil Carter, Mr Matthews’ supervisor at the University of York, said: “James was a very likeable young man who made great efforts to get to university and was determined to succeed in his studies.”
