DRUG users, drunken yobs and violent revellers have been arrested as part of an ongoing police campaign in York.

Officers were also able to order a number of individuals to leave the city centre over the weekend as part of Operation Style – Safe Time in York, Let’s Enjoy – run by Safer York Partnership.

Four people were ordered to leave the city centre and not return for 48 hours because of antisocial behaviour and police made five arrests for drunk and disorderly, public order, assault and drugs related offences.

Officers also checked 25 licensed premises within the city.

Police demonstrated the field impairment test – used when a person is suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol – and film clips were played from a media van in St Sampson’s Square warning people about the dangers of binge drinking.

Launched on June 4, Operation Style has already resulted in a number of arrests and dozens of people being ordered to leave the city centre.

The operation involves volunteers and Street Angels, who are on hand to provide advice and support to those who find themselves vulnerable as a result of drinking too much.

This support includes handing out bottled water to help with rehydration and flip-flops to women who are at risk of injury from glass due to removing high heels.

The scheme will continue every weekend throughout the summer, until September 4.

Jane Mowat, director of Safer York Partnership, said: “Operation Style is an excellent example of the police, Safer York Partnership and City of York Council working together to ensure that those who visit the city centre to enjoy the night time economy.

“We want people to start the evening in style and end it in style and that means not ending up in accident and emergency or in a police cell.”
