TWO of York’s most well-known hotels have been sold.
The Guy Fawkes Inn and Marmadukes had faced uncertainty since going into administration 15 months ago, but jobs and their futures are now safe.
Deals were struck by competitive tender lasting five months through property agency Colliers International of Leeds acting on behalf of joint administrators and fixed charge receivers, Phil Pearce and Andrew Sheridan of Baker Tilly Restructuring and Recovering LLP.
A Colliers spokesman reported there were several bids for both the 13-bedroom Guy Fawkes Inn and the 20-bedroom Marmadukes in St Peter’s Grove, just off Bootham.
The names of buyers are being kept confidential, but it is understood that one of them has other regional hotels and neither of them has a connection with the ill-fated previous owner, De Bretton, or its director, David Hattersley and his family.
The spokesman said the competitive bidding had “left a number of strong underbidders seeking similar high quality acquisition opportunities”.
