A DISUSED telephone kiosk in a North Yorkshire village has been transformed by residents into a miniature library.

The classic red phone booth in the centre of Marton-cum-Grafton, near Boroughbridge, was bought by residents for £1, as part of British Telecom’s Adopt A Kiosk campaign.

Local children are involved in a project to stock the tiny library with books, and council clerk Linda Bullus said the council hoped people would drop off more as they borrowed them.

Ms Bullus said the project had already brought a positive response from locals, but the phone box library is currently on a three-month trial period.

There is only a small number of books in the library at the moment, but if the scheme is successful, the council hopes it will remain as a permanent book exchange.

More than 350 red phone boxes have been adopted by small communities across the country since the start of the scheme, and earlier this month a phone booth in Chedworth, Gloucester was fitted with a heart defibrillator kit.
