YORKSHIRE League campaigns opened at a fine lick for both York and New Earswick Indoor Bowls Clubs.

York beat Redcar 83-76 picking up 14 points from three winning rinks in the first division, while, in division two, New Earswick gained 16 points from a 94-61 triumph over Saltburn.

For the home York side, Paul Humphreys’ rink surged into an 11-1 lead before a four two ends later ensured there was no way back for Redcar who crashed 27-10.

David Stroughair’s team took control with a three and a four on the 15th and 16th ends to fend off a fight-back and win 23-21.

In Redcar, Mark Clarke’s team led 10-5 only to be pegged back before countering to win 20-17. However, Paul Mooring’s rink managed to win only six ends in a comprehensive 28-13 defeat.

Both New Earswick home teams posted excellent wins.

Eking out a 10-8 lead, the rink led by Bob Edwards seized command to win 24-13, while Ralph Tiplady’s team pulled away for a 22-13 success.

Trailing by a point after six ends, power was also displayed by Paul Dawson’s away four to rattle up a 32-14 win.

The only defeat was for Barry Johnson’s men, who levelled with three ends to play only to lose them all and the game 21-16.

There was more New Earswick success in the Hebden Trophy, where they dispatched Doncaster 77-73 to amass 12 points.

Brian Birch’s team shook off a poor start to triumph 2712, though fellow away-day performers Dave Sykes’ charges fell 22-13.

At home there were 23-16 and 23-14 wins respectively for the rinks led by Dave Thompson and Phil Reeves.
