THE seven county council/AmeyCespa meetings intended to address concern regarding the Allerton incinerator concluded in Harrogate on September 22 with many questions unanswered. Here is a small sample confined to pollution. Is it true that three people die prematurely from air pollution in York every week? Are the figures available for the rest of the county and has the council estimated how many deaths the incinerator will add to this toll?

Given that our prevailing winds are westerly and York is approximately ten miles downwind of Allerton, is it fair to assume most of the toxins and other substances will be deposited there?

Is it true that air quality is already in default of Government objectives in many parts of the county other than York?

Is it true that the air quality has reached a point where our councils are now required to take action or face substantial fines?

If at some time in the future it is shown there are casualties resulting from incineration, who will compensate the victims?

Is it true that the incinerator has been oversized to accommodate a growing population? Will this result in increased air pollution?

There is widespread concern and, imaginary or not, anyone who develops cancer or any kind of respiratory problem after this incinerator is built will point their finger at it and at those who brought it upon us.
