A YOUNG driver has been told he is facing a jail sentence for a crash near Eggborough that killed a 20-year-old man and badly injured another.

Mark Anthony Tiffin, 20, of Derwent Place, Knottingley, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Jamie Nicholson, of Knottingley, by careless driving in Cobcroft Lane, Cridling Stubbs, on September 29 last year.

His case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report and he was released on bail on conditions that include living at his home address and co-operating with the Probation Service.

He was disqualified from driving. The length of his ban will be decided when he is sentenced.

The Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, warned Tiffin he could be jailed when he returns to York Crown Court on December 17.

Members of Mr Nicholson’s family were in court and sent the court what the judge described as “moving” statements about the effect the crash had had upon them.

Tiffin had originally denied the charge, but changed his plea after his defence team received an expert’s report on matters related to the crash.
