A CAR burst into flames today as it was being driven across Lendal Bridge in the centre of York.
The female driver of the Renault Megane was able to get out of the car safely before alerting firefighters, who arrived shortly after 11.30am.
Onlookers watched as crews from York Station used hose pipes and breathing apparatus to tackle the flames.
Witness Alan Denny said: "There were a couple of fire engines and massive flames coming out of the car.
“It seemed to have flames coming out of the front passenger window. I couldn't see anyone inside."
Lendal Bridge was not closed during the incident.
