ROADS and footways across York could benefit from an estimated £2.4m of resurfacing and improvement works next year.
A proposed list of nearly 80 roads and footways has been published today by the City of York Council.
Among the roads listed is the A1036 Malton Road which looks set to receive £147,000 of improvements.
More than £120,000 is estimated to be spent on the A166 Stamford Bridge Road and the A19 Selby Road.
Other roads that could benefit include Micklegate and Clifford Street in York, the B1224 Wetherby Road and the B1228 Elvington Lane.
The list has been published in a report which will go before Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Ann Reid, for approval later this month.
Agreeing the advanced programme now will allow officers to begin preparing the schemes to ensure they are ready to go at the beginning of the new financial year. It also means the required three months notice can be given for major schemes.
Coun Reid said highway maintenance had been consistently rated by residents as the top priority for council spending.
She said: “Liberal Democrat councillors and campaigners have been out surveying residents across the city throughout the year. Everywhere people are telling us that they want roads and footpaths to be one of the council’s top priorities. Over the last few years we have put extra money into road resurfacing through the Liberal Democrat budget. Last year we spent an extra £1m responding to residents’ wishes to invest in repairing roads and footpaths.
“Clearly the budget for next year has not been set so we cannot say for certain how much will be available for resurfacing, but it is important that we approve a provisional list.” She said the provisional list of schemes took on board comments from councillors and residents. She said: “The decision on which streets are included in the list is based on a condition survey of roads and footpaths.”
• Other roads in line for improvement work include part of Thanet Road and Sheriff Hutton Road, Burton Stone Lane, Hempland Lane, Tranby Avenue, Fordlands Road, and the A1237 from the A59.
