IN THE interests of truth, objectivity and the York way – Coun Fraser apparently needs reminding that as a Scot, he requires the Lord Mayor’s prior permission to enter York’s city walls, else he remains liable to face the pointed end of an arrow (Letters, December 8).

Even now, a queue is forming to enforce this wise statute, should Mrs Galloway seek volunteers.

I hold no brief for York’s current Lib Dems or hypocrisy displayed by their Con-Dependent Coalition pals. Least of all ‘Man Of York’ Vince Cable, over the university tuition fees dilemma.

However when it comes to hypocrisy, York’s Labour group does not escape untainted.

Labour, under Rod Hill’s leadership, sought the closure of its white elephant Barbican swimming pool (the diving facility was already closed) on financial grounds in 2000. This was pivotal at the 2000 by-election which saw my election to City of York Council.

Yet by York’s 2007 elections Labour, led by Dave Merrett, deputy leader seven years previously, prescribed a delightful 180-degree turn in support of local residents wishing to keep the facility open.

That the Lib Dems wanted to flog off the site by then, as part of the wondrous “strategic management” of Steve Galloway, came as no great surprise.
