HIS eventual destination was York’s Nestlé factory – but this lorry driver’s journey turned into a nightmare when he became stranded in snow for two days.
Steve Alderson, 53, has told how police had to rescue him from his freezing cab after he went into the early stages of hypothermia while on the M8 in Scotland.
Steve, who is understood to work for a third party haulier, said his night heater which usually kept the cab warm stopped working, leaving him with no heat.
“The police actually rescued me from my truck because I was in a bit of a state,” said Steve, from Halifax. “I didn’t realise this but I was so cold I began to shut down. I wasn’t thinking clearly, I wasn’t right. I was dizzy.
He said he was taken to a service station. “The girl at the services told me that the only person she had seen that looked as bad as me in her life was actually dead!
“I had some pain in my feet for 15 minutes but once I got into the warm and got a hot drink and a bacon and cheese muffin I felt better.”
He said he was eventually towed off after a few hours and headed for Girvan, to take a delivery of chocolate crumb to Nestlé in York.
“I’ve never experienced anything as bad as this before having driven around a substantial part of Europe and seen a lot of snow.”
