A VETERAN York councillor has been nominated as the city’s next Lord Mayor.
David Horton, who represents Acomb, will take on the ceremonial role from next year subject to the outcome of May’s local elections.
The Labour councillor was confirmed as the party’s choice for Lord Mayor at last week’s full meeting of the authority, having previously held the position in 2002/03. He was nominated by the group’s leader Coun James Alexander and seconded by council leader Andrew Waller.
“It is obviously an honour and a privilege to serve this great city,” said Coun Horton, who was first elected to the council in 1986.
“I look forward to undertaking the role of Lord Mayor, but I will not forget that May 5 next year is an important day when the local elections take place, and I must ensure I am elected by the good citizens of Acomb before I can take on that role.”
Coun Horton, who, if re-elected, will succeed Coun Sue Galloway as Lord Mayor, has named his close friend Alan Deller as next year’s Sheriff of York, with Mr Deller’s wife Ann being Sheriff’s Lady.
