CRIME-BEATING scientists near York are to lose their jobs after the Government announced it is to close a major laboratory service.
The Forensic Science Service’s Wetherby centre has provided the evidence that has secured the conviction of many criminals across the country and is often used by North Yorkshire Police.
But now it is the latest victim of the Government spending cuts as the entire service is axed, with hundreds of jobs going at the service’s centres in Wetherby, Birmingham and elsewhere.
James Brokenshire, Home Office minister, revealed in the House of Commons that the service was losing £2 million a month and would run out of money next month. Police forces were using it less as they cut back on forensic tests to save money.
