THE sight of the gritting lorry in Allanson Grove was very welcome. It took a while for it to reach our back street, but it took only two hours to get a reply from Coun James Alexander, with a promise of urgent help, when I drew his attention to the hazardous state of the road surface.

Many thanks to him, and all the people who have worked so hard to keep us safe during this long spell of cold weather.

Kathleen Willey, Rosemary Thornton, John Bisson, Allanson Grove, York.

• THE reason we are afraid of clearing away snow and ice from footpaths outside our boundaries is because the law as it stands makes you liable if someone falls.

So until the law is clarified no one will clear, as willing as we might be. It would make life much easier if we could. It’s more treacherous not clearing than to clear.

Mrs BM Wartnaby, Holgate Lodge Drive, Holgate, York.

• I KNOW everybody is fed up hearing about the snow and ice, but with another blast of wintry weather apparently imminent, I had to write to condemn the state of cycle lanes.

Nearly three weeks since the first snow fall at the tail end of November, and it appears that absolutely no attempt has been made to clear main cycle routes.

My husband has now come off his bike three times while travelling to and from work; he is not a fair-weather cyclist, he is young and healthy and cycles sensibly and wears protective clothes and a helmet.

He also does not use purely obscure side roads.

He cycles along Boroughbridge Road, Water Lane, along the river through Fulford and the University of York campus and on to Hull Road.

This route incorporates some fairly major and important cycle routes that are used by hundreds of people.

Leah Furniss, York.

• A FEW weeks ago, just before the snow arrived, I had a word with Coun Ann Reid about the salt bins.

The reason being we couldn’t find any last year and when we did they were too far away; but this year we’ve had a gritter, four workmen and driver, and nearer salt bins.

So I take my hat off to Coun Ann Reid. I had a word with another councillor, mentioning no names, but didn’t want to know.

So thank you once again, Ann.

Mr D King, Acomb, York.
